Hiking Loblolly Trail and Schenck Forest in Raleigh NC

I joined a local hiking Meetupgroup.  I went on my first hike yesterday.  We started at Schenck Forest and from there ended up on the Loblolly Trail.

Loblolly Trail
Location: Back righthand corner of the Reedy Creek Entrance parking lot.
Description: This out and back trail crosses Reedy Creek and continues to the park boundary. For those looking to venture farther, the trail connects to Schenck Forest. Options for loops are available at intersections with the park’s multi-use trail at Reedy Creek Trail and South Turkey Creek Trail.

When I hike with a group, I pay little attention to our location.  I just follow along and trust the leader.  We had a group of around 15 yesterday and I came up the rear so I could take photos.  We went about 6 miles at a good clip, about 2.75mph. 
 



Schenck Forest
As I was reading the rules on the sign I saw a word I was not familiar with.  Geocaching???
Lets Google it.  Here is what Wikipedia had to say...

"Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world."

I did not have a bike a horse a dog or a gun and I had no plan to geocaching so I was good to go:-)

 We jogged up this hill on the way back.  It was a bit steeper then it looks in the photo...

All in all a lovely hike.  And yes, I am sore and tired but can't wait until my next hike.
Get out and explore.  I suggest you go on a hike.

      Yes I am sore! It was a lovely day for a hike. There seem to be many forks in this trail so please take a map. I hope to try out many new trails with my new hiking buddies. Thanks for stopping by:-)

    Wow, that hill looked steep enough to me - I bet you ARE sore. But the scenery looks like it was worth it. Great pics!

      Thanks, I was just sitting here thinking how sore I am:-) It was worth it though. I am going on another hike this weekend. Stay tuned for the post.

      Yes you should check out meetup groups. There are so many areas of interest. I like the photo clubs, dinning out, hiking and the list goes on. Let me know if you find a group.

    Looks like a great hike! There are a few great meet-up groups in the area, and I'm glad you connected with one! I'm trying to think...I don't think I've ever actually been to Schenck forest (probably because dogs are prohibited), but I'll have to check it out soon!

      It was a fun hike. Today I am headed to Jordan Lake with a group. We are going 5.5 miles and of course I am taking my camera:-)

    What a pretty trail! I use to live near Raleigh, but never heard of this place...It seems like I'm finding so many cool places only after moving away!

Interesting NC Tidbits...The Town of Buffalo NC is at the Bottom of Lake Lure.

A few weeks ago I took a trip to beautiful Lake Lure located in my state of NC.  Little did I know that there was a town called Buffalo under the Lake Lure waters.   I met a lady at a local restaurant that told me the town remains as it was, completely preserved under the water, an underwater ghost town.  On the Lake Lure pontoon boat adventure I took, I was told that Buffalo was burned to the ground just prior to the flooding. I went online to see what facts I could find about the town of Buffalo. Buffalo was a farming and mining community.  The population was approximately 150 people.  There was a church called Whiteside Valley Church of 1918 that had about 98 members.   The dam was built to generate electricity in the early 1900's, and just after the completion of the dam the town was flooded.    From what I could find online much of the town was torn down and relocated as were parts of the church.  The graves in the small graveyard were relocated as well.  You can r

Restaurant Review...Eddie's on Lake Norman, Mooresville NC

One thing I love about travel is trying new restaurants.  Cindy and I found ourselves on an adventure in the Mooresville NC area near Lake Norman.  There is nothing like enjoying a meal by the water and when we read that Eddie's was on the water we decided to give it a try.  Off we went... Eddie's on Lake Norman Here is a quote from their website. Sadly it did not get the best reviews on Z omato , but for the view and casual dinning I would go back. The staff was friendly and service was good. The Hickory Nut Gift and Antique Shop in Chimney Rock NC

While exploring Lake Lure and the surrounding area I discovered a unique and inviting gift shop.  The name of the shop is  The Hickory Nut .   I drove past this shop several times while exploring the area.  On my final day, I decided I would regret if I did not stop in for a visit. I was glad I did! As you can see from the photos there is something for everyone. From my overview of the shop I found seasonal decorations, plants, home decor, antiques,  crafts, and endless gift items.  The address of the shop is 215 Main St, Chimney Rock, NC 28720.  It is located on the main road between The town of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village.  The phone number I found for them if you want to check hours is 828-625-2211.
