Nana and Caleb's Adventures The Tree Toss at the Conservators Center

Image
If you read my blog you know I am always on the lookout for a unique adventure.  I enjoy new experiences on my own, but one of my greatest joys is going on adventures with Caleb.  We call them "Nana's and Caleb's Adventures."  We had not been on an adventure outing in some time, and when I saw the Tree Toss advertised at the  Conservators Center , I knew we had to go. You may be asking just what and where is the Conservators Center?  Here is a quote from their website... "The Conservators Center was founded in 1999 in Mebane, NC. After volunteering and working for other wildlife oriented organizations, Douglas Evans and Mindy Stinner founded the Center as an educational non-profit dedicated to providing a specialized home for select carnivore species. In 2001 the Center relocated onto 45 acres of beautiful, forested land in Caswell County, of which only approximately 10 acres is currently developed. Over the next few years, the site grew to house three tige...

A Visit to Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck North Carolina

Image
This post is an old post from 2013 on Sylvan Heights Bird Park.  I am sure a lot has changed since then and I would love to return for a visit... I had the chance to go on an adventure with a local meetup group on Saturday. The Lady Trailblazers were headed to  Sylvan Heights Bird Park  in Scotland Neck NC, so I jumped at the chance to join them. It was a two-hour drive, and I decided to be one of many drivers taking a carload of people on this journey. I was happy to have Beth and VJ as my travel buddies; they were great navigators too:-) From Sylvan Heights website.... "Sylvan Heights Bird Park is designed to give visitors an unforgettable up-close experience with over 2,000 ducks, geese, swans, and other exotic birds from all around the world. Open to the public since Oct 2006, the 18 acre facility features large, walk through aviaries displaying birds from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Tranquil gardens and lush nat...

This Month in NC History....The Blue Laws. Voice Lessons for Everyone!

Image
In Jan 1716 the Blue Laws were instituted in North Carolina.  As I understand it these laws were rules that were established to observe the Sabbath.  It seemed to involve not doing business or buying alcohol on Sunday.  Thank goodness most of these laws are now off the books. I went to an online dictionary and found this definition of Blue Law a law prohibiting certain activities, such as shopping, on a Sunday. (in colonial New England) a strict religious law, particularly one preventing entertainment or leisure activities on a Sunday. Other NC Laws Reading about the Blue Laws lead me to site called "Big Government. Small Brains. Dumb Laws" .  So now I have to read some of the silly laws that may still be on the books in NC.  I will share a few that I found on this site. *It is against the law to sing off key.  I know many folks who would be in jail if this was enforced.  * Persons in possession of illegal substances mus...

I Went Out In Search of a Man...A Snowman!

Image
I don't know exactly how much snow came down in our area of NC yesterday,  I have heard anywhere from 4"-12".  I think we probably had around 8 inches here in Cary.  The snow on the ground today is the most snow accumulation I have seen in a very long time here in the south, and it is beautiful. I decided to head out for a walk and search for a man...a snowman.  Please join me on my search... I found a few snowmen in the neighborhood.... A lovely snow couple. This one made me smile. "Sometimes I think my snowman is giving me the cold shoulder  but I can turn things around and melt his heart with a warm smile" If you were lucky enough to have snow in your area be sure and take some photos. I would love to see them. Have a great day! KathieyV:-) (If you would like to buy me a cup of hot chocolate check out my  GoFundMe  page.  Thanks:-)

NCMA Exhibit: Inspiring Beauty 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair

Image
We have a fantastic museum here in North Carolina.   The North Carolina Museum of Art  or for short NCMA, in Raleigh NC. I went with a Meetup group to an exhibit called  Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair.  It is a beautiful and inspiring exhibit, and if you get a chance, I suggest you attend.  Here are a few photos from the event.... I love the detail in this dress.  Beautiful! At the end of the event, they have a virtual fitting room.   Here you can scroll through and virtually try on several of the fashion items.   Such fun! Take advantage of the offerings of the museums in your area.   There is so much to see, do, and learn. Happy Travels and Adventures! The South Academy Street Mural in Downtown Cary North Carolina

Image
As you know, I love murals.  I found this one on South Academy Street in Cary North Carolina.  I searched and searched to find the history behind this painting, but I had no luck.  In lieu of the history of the mural, I will give you a couple of historical notes from Wikipedia  "In 1750, Cary began as a settlement called Bradford's Ordinary. Allison Francis "Frank" Page is credited with founding the town.  Page was a Wake County farmer and lumberman." Happy Travels! KathieyV
