Watch out for the Bears! New Bern Bear Town Bears in New Bern NC

I wanted to take a walking tour while in New Bern and one tour that piqued my interest was "New Bern Area Bear Town Bears".  There are over 50 bears in the to be found in the New Bern area, I decided to search for the "Downtown Bear Town Bears."

Why are there bears in New Bern you may ask?  Here is a quote from the brochure that explains everything.
"New Bern was settled in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine German immigrants led by Baron Christoph DeGraffenried. The new colonists named the settlement Bern, the capital of Switzerland and hometown of their leader.  

Many years before New Bern was settled, Bern, Switzerland was founded by a group of hunters who named the city after the first animal they came upon on their hunting expedition ... A bear.  "Bern" is the old Germanic word for bear and the bear came to be the symbol of the city."

 After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the Aerie Bed and Breakfast I headed out map and camera in hand in search of a few bears.  It did not take me long to find my first bear.  

"New Bern celebrated its 300th Anniversary in 2010 by hosting a variety of festivities.  In honor of the anniversary, over 50 fiberglass, ceramic bears, sponsored and adopted by local businesses, we situated throughout the city."

How I understand the process is that local businesses sponsor and adopt a bear.  It takes about a year to complete the process.

I did not see all the Downtown Bear Town Bears, but I found several.  What a great day it was, walking down the beautiful streets of New Bern searching for bears.

If you find yourself in New Bern, keep your eyes open for the Bears!

    I have been home for about a week. I would love to grab a cup of coffee with you next time I am in the area. Do you live in New Bern? New Bern is beautiful. I will slowly be doing blog posts on my visit.If you make it to RTP let me know I would love to meet you.

Interesting NC Tidbits...The Town of Buffalo NC is at the Bottom of Lake Lure.

A few weeks ago I took a trip to beautiful Lake Lure located in my state of NC.  Little did I know that there was a town called Buffalo under the Lake Lure waters.   I met a lady at a local restaurant that told me the town remains as it was, completely preserved under the water, an underwater ghost town.  On the Lake Lure pontoon boat adventure I took, I was told that Buffalo was burned to the ground just prior to the flooding. I went online to see what facts I could find about the town of Buffalo. Buffalo was a farming and mining community.  The population was approximately 150 people.  There was a church called Whiteside Valley Church of 1918 that had about 98 members.   The dam was built to generate electricity in the early 1900's, and just after the completion of the dam the town was flooded.    From what I could find online much of the town was torn down and relocated as were parts of the church.  The graves in the small graveyard were relocated as well.  You can r

Restaurant Review...Eddie's on Lake Norman, Mooresville NC

One thing I love about travel is trying new restaurants.  Cindy and I found ourselves on an adventure in the Mooresville NC area near Lake Norman.  There is nothing like enjoying a meal by the water and when we read that Eddie's was on the water we decided to give it a try.  Off we went... Eddie's on Lake Norman Here is a quote from their website. "Eddie Lubic and Ann-Margaret Wagner bring their hospitality and restaurant expertise  from New York to the shores of Lake Norman."  View from our outdoor seating... Sadly it did not get the best reviews on Z omato , but for the view and casual dinning I would go back. The staff was friendly and service was good. Winkler Bakery in Old Salem NC

WINKLER BAKERY 521 SOUTH MAIN STREET Constructed 1800, restored 1968 One place Gale and I knew we had to visit was the bakery in Old Salem.  I have enjoyed the Moravian cookies over the years but everyone has told me I had to try the sugar cake. Look at all the temptations....Yummy:-) A bit of history.... The sugar cake was amazing.  We took it back to our room and enjoyed the yummy sweetness in front of the beautiful fireplace in our room.  We also shared a bottle of local wine.  What a lovely day:-) Happy Travels Everyone!
