A Visit to Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck North Carolina

This post is an old post from 2013 on Sylvan Heights Bird Park.  I am sure a lot has changed since then and I would love to return for a visit...
I had the chance to go on an adventure with a local meetup group on Saturday. The Lady Trailblazers were headed to Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck NC, so I jumped at the chance to join them. It was a two-hour drive, and I decided to be one of many drivers taking a carload of people on this journey. I was happy to have Beth and VJ as my travel buddies; they were great navigators too:-)

"Sylvan Heights Bird Park is designed to give visitors an unforgettable up-close experience with over 2,000 ducks, geese, swans, and other exotic birds from all around the world.
Open to the public since Oct 2006, the 18 acre facility features large, walk through aviaries displaying birds from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Tranquil gardens and lush natural areas enhance the beauty of the birds on exhibit."

If you visit Sylvan Heights Bird Park be sure and explore the Landing Zone.  Below is a quote from their website....

"Don't miss the Landing Zone during your Sylvan Heights field trip!  Visitors enter into a large, free-flight aviary with hundreds of colorful parakeets, flamingos, and other exotic birds.  Entrance to the Landing Zone is free, but for the best experience, purchase a seed stick or bag of flamingo food for $1 each and give your students an unforgettable up-close encounter!"
It was fun to feed and hold the birds..









I had a great time at the bird park.  Enjoyed the day with some really nice people all the while seeing hundreds of beautiful birds.  If you get a chance, I suggest you visit.  It is worth the trip.

Interesting NC Tidbits...The Town of Buffalo NC is at the Bottom of Lake Lure.

A few weeks ago I took a trip to beautiful Lake Lure located in my state of NC.  Little did I know that there was a town called Buffalo under the Lake Lure waters.   I met a lady at a local restaurant that told me the town remains as it was, completely preserved under the water, an underwater ghost town.  On the Lake Lure pontoon boat adventure I took, I was told that Buffalo was burned to the ground just prior to the flooding. I went online to see what facts I could find about the town of Buffalo. Buffalo was a farming and mining community.  The population was approximately 150 people.  There was a church called Whiteside Valley Church of 1918 that had about 98 members.   The dam was built to generate electricity in the early 1900's, and just after the completion of the dam the town was flooded.    From what I could find online much of the town was torn down and relocated as were parts of the church.  The graves in the small graveyard were relocated as well.  You can r

Restaurant Review...Eddie's on Lake Norman, Mooresville NC

One thing I love about travel is trying new restaurants.  Cindy and I found ourselves on an adventure in the Mooresville NC area near Lake Norman.  There is nothing like enjoying a meal by the water and when we read that Eddie's was on the water we decided to give it a try.  Off we went... Eddie's on Lake Norman Here is a quote from their website. "Eddie Lubic and Ann-Margaret Wagner bring their hospitality and restaurant expertise  from New York to the shores of Lake Norman."  View from our outdoor seating... Sadly it did not get the best reviews on Z omato , but for the view and casual dinning I would go back. The staff was friendly and service was good. The Hickory Nut Gift and Antique Shop in Chimney Rock NC

While exploring Lake Lure and the surrounding area I discovered a unique and inviting gift shop.  The name of the shop is  The Hickory Nut .   I drove past this shop several times while exploring the area.  On my final day, I decided I would regret if I did not stop in for a visit. I was glad I did! As you can see from the photos there is something for everyone. From my overview of the shop I found seasonal decorations, plants, home decor, antiques,  crafts, and endless gift items.  The address of the shop is 215 Main St, Chimney Rock, NC 28720.  It is located on the main road between The town of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village.  The phone number I found for them if you want to check hours is 828-625-2211.
